Private label manufacturing checklist
What to prepare before you develop a private label consumer product, from concept and specifications to packaging, compliance and quantities.
A clear brief makes private label development faster and cheaper. Use this checklist to gather what a manufacturer and a sourcing partner will ask for.
Before you start
- Product concept. What it is, who it is for and why it is worth choosing.
- Target market. Where it will sell and any market preferences.
- Specifications. Size, materials, performance and any must have features.
- Packaging and artwork. Pack format, brand assets and any claims you want to make.
- Compliance. Labelling and regulatory requirements for your market, confirmed with your own advisers.
- Quantities. Your expected order size and how it fits minimum production quantities.
- Timeline and budget. When you need it and your commercial expectations.
What happens next
With the brief in hand, a partner coordinates suitable manufacturers, leads the packaging and artwork, arranges approval samples and prepares a commercial proposal. Claims and labels are always approved by you before production.
